Introduction

Seven South African technology startups have been selected to participate in the third edition of the Irish Tech Challenge South Africa. This initiative is designed to foster collaborative partnerships between South African entrepreneurs and Ireland's globally recognized technology expertise. By leveraging Ireland’s status as a global tech hub, the challenge aims to create mutually beneficial relationships that drive innovation and growth.

The Irish Tech Challenge

The Irish Tech Challenge, organized annually by the Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, collaborates with several key partners including Wits University’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), and Dogpatch Labs Ireland. The challenge underscores Ireland’s commitment to advancing global technological partnerships and supporting entrepreneurs in emerging markets.

A Focus on Sustainable Development

This year’s challenge attracted over 350 entries from South African-owned, growth-stage tech startups, each dedicated to addressing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The seven selected startups will engage in a rigorous pre-acceleration programme, which includes workshops, masterclasses, and mentorship sessions held in South Africa. These activities are designed to prepare the startups for scaling and securing international partnerships.

Opportunities for the Selected Startups

The seven selected entrepreneurs will each receive up to EUR10,000 (approximately US$11,000) in funding. Additionally, they will embark on a fully funded trip to Ireland, where they will participate in a curated business networking programme. This programme provides access to Ireland’s leading business figures and the broader Irish tech ecosystem, offering opportunities for further funding and acceleration support from Dogpatch Labs.
