Expanding Access to Clean Energy and Regenerative Agriculture

Nairobi-based biogas technology company, Sistema.bio, has secured $15 million in new funding to accelerate the global expansion of its sustainable energy solutions. This funding will enable the company to scale its operations and enter new markets, while continuing to deliver clean energy and regenerative agricultural practices to smallholder farmers around the world.

The funding round was led by ElectriFI, managed by EDFI Management Company, with participation from existing investors such as Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts.

Supporting Smallholder Farmers with Biogas Technology

Sistema.bio is renowned for its innovative biogas technology that transforms animal waste into clean energy and biofertiliser, empowering smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices. The company’s biodigesters provide renewable energy for cooking and electricity, while the resulting biofertilisers enhance soil health and boost crop yields.

To date, over 12,000 farms across 31 countries have installed Sistema.bio’s biogas systems, showcasing the far-reaching impact of their technology. With a strong presence in Africa, the company operates in key countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, benefiting more than 100,000 farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Strategic Partnerships for Broader Reach in Rural Africa

Sistema.bio has also forged partnerships to further extend its reach. Notably, its collaboration with Engie Access, an off-grid energy service provider, is helping introduce biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique. This partnership aligns with Sistema.bio’s mission to increase energy access in rural areas, improving both productivity and energy security for farmers through renewable energy solutions.

The company’s approach not only addresses the energy needs of smallholder farmers but also supports global efforts to decarbonise agriculture. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable farming practices, Sistema.bio is helping to mitigate the environmental impact of farming.

Driving Global Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

Sistema.bio’s CEO, Alexander Eaton, has expressed the company’s commitment to empowering one million farmers by 2025 and reducing global carbon emissions by 1% by 2030. Beyond supplying clean energy, the company’s technology supports climate adaptation by cutting CO₂ emissions and providing biofertilisers that increase agricultural productivity.

The recent $15 million funding builds on the momentum from Sistema.bio’s Series B round in 2022, positioning the company for further growth across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This new investment reflects confidence in the company’s ability to scale its impact and advance its mission of creating a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for farming.

Leading the Push for Sustainable Farming and Clean Energy

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Sistema.bio stands out as a pioneer in offering practical solutions for smallholder farmers. With operations on three continents, the company is well-positioned to play a key role in advancing renewable energy adoption and sustainable agriculture practices—especially in Africa, where smallholder farmers are critical to both food security and environmental resilience.

This latest investment underscores Sistema.bio's transformative potential to reshape farming through biogas technology, supporting sustainable development while contributing to the fight against climate change.
