Introduction

In 2020, Odeke Abel founded Equal Aqua Uganda, an NGO based in Kampala, driven by his passion to address water inequality. Inspired by firsthand experiences with water challenges during a placement under the International Citizen Service (ICS), Abel felt compelled to take action. His host family's daily struggles to access clean water exposed him to the harsh realities faced by many Ugandans and spurred his desire to create meaningful change. Today, Equal Aqua Uganda operates with a mission aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6—Clean Water and Sanitation for All.

The Birth of Equal Aqua Uganda

Equal Aqua Uganda was founded by a group of volunteers, including Abel, who shared a common goal: to ensure clean water access and promote sanitation in vulnerable communities. The organization officially launched as a registered Community Based Organization (CBO) in Uganda, while Equal Aqua operates as a registered Charitable Incorporated Organization (CIO) in the UK. This dual structure fosters international partnerships, enabling the organization to expand its reach and impact beyond Uganda’s borders.

Abel’s drive stems from his conviction that access to clean water should be a fundamental right, not a privilege. His experiences during his volunteer service exposed him to the stark disparities in water access, especially in rural areas. This vision for equal access to water and sanitation formed the foundation of Equal Aqua Uganda, which has since become a beacon of hope for thousands of individuals in need.

Services Offered

Equal Aqua Uganda provides critical services, including the construction of water tanks, latrines, and the donation of water filters, specifically targeting schools, health centers, and marketplaces. Abel and his team also focus on empowering women and girls, recognizing that they are often disproportionately affected by the lack of clean water access. The organization’s work not only improves sanitation but also helps communities become more resilient and self-sufficient.

By building water infrastructure and providing essential training in sanitation and hygiene, Equal Aqua Uganda has made significant strides in combating water-related challenges in Uganda. The organization has provided over 21,842 individuals with access to safe, sustainable water, trained 10,327 people in sanitation practices, and equipped 12,997 people through its skilling program. These milestones underscore the organization's ability to deliver impactful, life-changing services to thousands of Ugandans.

One of the organization's proudest achievements is its ability to integrate skilling programs alongside water and sanitation initiatives. These programs equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to maintain the infrastructure, ensuring that communities remain resilient long after Equal Aqua Uganda has completed its work.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many organizations, Equal Aqua Uganda has faced its share of challenges. One of the most persistent hurdles is political interference. However, Abel has taken a pragmatic approach, inviting political leaders to witness the projects firsthand and encouraging them to participate in decision-making. This inclusive strategy has helped to mitigate potential roadblocks, allowing the organization to achieve its objectives.

In addition to political challenges, securing consistent funding remains a struggle. However, Abel’s resilience and his team's innovative thinking have allowed them to maximize the resources at their disposal, ensuring that they continue to deliver on their mission.

By continuing to build on their successes, Abel believes that Equal Aqua Uganda can become a leading force in the global fight for water equality.
