Driving Africa’s EV Revolution Forward

Spiro, an electric vehicle (EV) company that launched in Kenya in 2023, has officially opened its state-of-the-art manufacturing center in Nairobi. The facility is a significant milestone in Spiro’s expansion across Africa, aiming to produce thousands of electric bikes and batteries annually. Since beginning operations in July, the company has already deployed its 1,000th electric bike in Kenya, with plans to accelerate production as the facility reaches full capacity. Across the continent, Spiro has successfully deployed over 18,000 electric bikes, solidifying its presence in the African EV market.

Fostering Local Talent: The Launch of Spiro Academy

In addition to the manufacturing center, Spiro is launching the Spiro Academy, an initiative dedicated to training and upskilling local talent in electric bike and battery manufacturing and assembly. This academy reflects the company’s commitment to creating job opportunities, particularly for youth and women, in the communities where they operate.

Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro, emphasized the importance of the Academy in achieving the company’s broader mission: “Supporting youth employment and empowering women is central to our goals. The establishment of the Spiro Academy and our manufacturing facility are key steps towards realizing these objectives, as we create meaningful opportunities for the local community.”

Impacting Communities: Economic, Social, and Environmental Gains

Spiro’s Deputy, Raymond Kitunga, expressed pride in the positive outcomes already visible from the new initiatives. “We are incredibly proud of the impact that our manufacturing center and Academy are having. Spiro’s commitment to social, economic, and environmental progress is clear in the opportunities we’re generating and the sustainable transportation solutions we’re bringing to Kenya,” he remarked.

Tackling Africa’s Air Pollution Crisis

With transportation contributing significantly to rising greenhouse gas emissions in Africa, Spiro’s electric motorbikes offer a timely solution. The continent’s transportation emissions are increasing by 7% annually, while air pollution is the second leading cause of death, linked to heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. Approximately 1.1 million premature deaths each year are attributed to air pollution. Spiro’s electric motorbikes, which emit no exhaust fumes, have the potential to greatly reduce air pollution, particularly in urban centers.

Innovative Technology for a Seamless Experience

Spiro’s business model revolves around its innovative battery swapping technology, which allows riders to access a network of swapping stations, as well as fast and slow chargers and home charging options. The company’s State of Charge (SoC) technology further enhances the user experience by offering a reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
