Expanding Biochar Production Capacity

Climate tech company Bio-Logical, a leading biochar carbon removal firm based in Kenya, has successfully secured $1.3 million in funding. This significant investment will be used to expand their Mt. Kenya biochar facility, aiming to meet the growing demand for carbon removal and to support climate resilience for Kenyan smallholder farmers.

Enhancing Carbon Removal and Fertilizer Production

With this new funding, Bio-Logical plans to increase its carbon removal and fertilizer production capacity. The goal is to become one of the world's largest biochar producers, enhancing crop yields and climate resilience for thousands of smallholder farmers across Kenya.

"Smallholder farmers, who are among the worst affected by climate change, are currently suffering from a crisis they did not contribute to. At Bio-Logical, we use carbon removals not only to sequester carbon but also to develop affordable, soil-regenerating fertilizers that boost yields and improve the climate resilience of smallholder farmers throughout Kenya," said Philip Hunter, Co-CEO of Bio-Logical.

Strategic Investments and Partnerships

The funding round was led by a group of high-net-worth individuals and other investors, including CrossBoundary, Redshaw Advisors, and existing investors, the Steyn Group. This investment aligns with Bio-Logical’s ambition to increase its carbon removal capacity to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually over the next 18 months, with plans to establish three additional sites across Kenya.

"Redshaw Advisors is delighted to participate in Bio-Logical’s latest fundraising. This will help them create high-integrity carbon removal credits while simultaneously positively impacting farmers needing support with climate resilience. This naturally complements our work supporting corporates that want to take positive action on climate change with high-quality projects in countries most in need of decarbonisation support," said Louis Redshaw, CEO of Redshaw Advisors.

Future Plans and Microsoft Partnership

Following their deal with Microsoft in 2023, which marked the largest single purchase of biochar carbon removal from an African biochar project, Bio-Logical is set to scale up its annual removal capacity to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next 18 months.

"This funding round will play a pivotal role in scaling up our Mt. Kenya facility and building a blueprint for scale as we roll out three new sites throughout Kenya over the next 18 months," said Rory Buckworth, Co-CEO of Bio-Logical.
