Introduction
Google has officially opened applications for its Google for Startups Accelerator Africa: Black Founders program, specifically tailored to support Black-owned startups in South Africa. This initiative aims to provide critical funding and resources to innovative businesses that are building solutions for African and global markets.
Empowering South African Black-Owned Startups
The accelerator program is targeted at startups that are both headquartered and operational in South Africa, focusing on those that have demonstrated market fit and show strong growth potential. Eligible startups must be solving challenges in the African or international market, with a proven product that can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and Google’s ecosystem of products.
Eligibility Criteria for Black Founders
To qualify for the program, applicants must meet a few essential requirements. Startups must:
- Have at least one Black South African founder with relevant entrepreneurial experience.
- Possess a high-performing and motivated team.
- Offer a live product that uses or has the potential to use AI.
- Show compatibility with Google products and demonstrate potential to scale through Google’s tools and support.
These criteria ensure that only the most promising and scalable businesses will benefit from the accelerator's resources.
Program Benefits: Equity-Free Funding and Cloud Credits
The hybrid accelerator program will run from early 2024 through March 2025. A select group of 15 startups will receive an impressive package of support, including:
- Equity-free funding of up to $50,000 (more than R1 million).
- $200,000 (R3.6 million) in cloud credits for scaling their operations using Google’s cloud services.
- Personalized mentorship and one-on-one training to tackle each startup’s unique challenges.
- Access to a global network of mentors, experts, and investors to help them grow and thrive in competitive markets.
Local Partner for Fund Distribution
To ensure the efficient distribution of the funds and resources, Google will work with a locally based implementation partner. This ensures that the process remains grounded in the South African context and that the right support is given to the participating startups.
Driving Innovation and Economic Growth in Africa
Speaking about the initiative, Folarin Aiyegbusi, Google’s head of startup ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the importance of supporting startups in the region. "Startups in Africa are critical drivers of innovation, economic growth, and social progress," said Aiyegbusi. "By investing in South African Black-owned startups, we are driving systemic change and promoting job creation and wealth generation for the future."
How to Apply
Applications for the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa: Black Founders program are now open and will close on 14 October 2024. Black-owned startups with innovative solutions and a drive to grow are encouraged to apply through the program’s official platform.
