Introduction
Applications are now open for the 2024 UNDP Timbuktoo Fintech Startup Accelerator Programme, a Pan-African initiative designed to support and accelerate the growth of fintech startups across Africa. The Timbuktoo Fintech Hub, based in Lagos, Nigeria, invites young innovators to participate in this transformative program aimed at fostering technology-driven solutions in the financial services sector.
Programme Overview
The Timbuktoo Fintech Startup Accelerator Programme focuses on startups that:
- Leverage Technology Solutions: These startups utilize digital tools and platforms to drive innovation and efficiency in the financial sector.
- Contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Startups whose solutions promote growth, industrialization, trade, education, health, and inclusive governance.
- Demonstrate High Scalability: Startups capable of rapidly expanding their user base across African markets through digital distribution channels.
- Hold a Defensible Position: Startups with strong competitive advantages such as Intellectual Property (IP) rights, network effects, domain expertise, or regional market dominance.
- Have a Strong Monetization Strategy: Startups with clear and sustainable paths to profitability and long-term financial viability.
Eligibility Requirements
The programme is open to technology-focused entrepreneurs and startup founders across Africa aged between 18 and 35. Eligible startups must:
- Be founded by citizens of an African country.
- Be locally owned and based in any African country.
- Leverage technology in the financial services sector to solve complex development challenges.
- Have a minimum viable product.
- Maintain existing corporate governance systems, accountability, and social and environmental safeguards.
*Note: Applications are limited to citizens of African Union member states.

Participants in the programme will receive:

- Equity-Free Funding: Up to $25,000 USD to support startup growth.

Programme Structure
The programme begins with an immersive 4-week bootcamp, featuring pitching sessions with leading investors, masterclasses with fintech experts, and fireside chats with industry executives. This phase focuses on product development, go-to-market strategies, and market testing. The bootcamp will be conducted in a hybrid format, with continuous virtual support and a 2-week physical residency in Lagos, Nigeria, from July 7th to 21st, 2024.
Incubation & Acceleration
The most promising startups from the bootcamp will receive long-term tailored support for five months, from August 2024 to December 2024. This phase includes coaching, product refinement, scaling, and facilitated partnerships to enhance product iterations, market access, and capital raising. Selected startups will have the opportunity to receive additional equity-free funding of up to $25,000 USD.
Application Procedure
The application portal is open from May 31st, 2024, to June 21st, 2024. Only complete applications will be considered. Applicants must submit necessary documents and provide information about their startup and motivation to join the programme.

- Applications and Selection Process: May 2024 – June 2024
- Bootcamp: July 2024 (Physical attendance in Lagos, Nigeria from July 7th – 21st, 2024)
- Incubation & Acceleration: August 2024 – December 2024
