Introduction

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has taken a significant step forward in the fight against climate change with the launch of its Climate Change Innovation Programme. Funded by the Netherlands through the High Impact Partnership for Climate Action (HIPCA), this initiative aims to empower businesses across Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Egypt to spearhead innovative solutions addressing climate challenges.

Unveiling the Call

In a bid to harness the power of innovation, the EBRD has announced a call for applications from companies with pioneering ideas poised to combat climate change. This call presents a unique opportunity for businesses in the aforementioned countries to showcase their innovative concepts and contribute to global efforts against climate change.

Scope of Projects

The Climate Change Innovation Programme encompasses a wide range of projects focused on climate adaptation, mitigation, and biodiversity preservation. From cutting-edge technologies to sustainable practices, the programme seeks to support initiatives that hold the potential to drive tangible environmental impact.

Collaborative Opportunities

Selected companies will not only receive financial support but also gain access to invaluable resources. Through collaboration with researchers and developers, participants will have the opportunity to refine and test the feasibility of their projects. Grants of up to €20,000 will be awarded to facilitate activities such as feasibility research, software and hardware development, prototyping, and testing.

The HIPCA Initiative

The launch of the Climate Change Innovation Programme marks a significant milestone in the broader context of the HIPCA initiative. Introduced during COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021, HIPCA represents a collaborative effort between the EBRD and partner governments to catalyze investments and solutions aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resilience, and safeguarding the environment.

Thematic Focus Areas

Under the umbrella of the HIPCA initiative, the EBRD has identified eight thematic areas of focus. These include energy systems, sustainable food systems, green financial systems, cities and environmental infrastructure, and natural capital. Additionally, the initiative addresses cross-cutting issues such as climate adaptation and resilience, just transition, gender equality, and economic inclusion.

Empowering Environmental Entrepreneurs

As businesses vie for participation in the Climate Change Innovation Programme, the initiative serves as a testament to the EBRD's commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the realm of environmental sustainability. By empowering local enterprises to drive positive change, the programme paves the way for a greener, more resilient future.
